A necessary part of
our mission is to raise enough money to accomplish our goals. The
dues that members pay each year sustain our operations. Additional
funds are needed to accomplish vital improvements to this National
Treasure.
Our two greatest priorities this year are:
§
The Post Hospital Restoration Project
§
Protecting the Historical View Project
Post Hospital
Restoration Project
The Post Hospital
Restoration Project is made possible by a grant that the Friends
received from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in
November, 2004 under their Save America’s Treasures Program. This is
a matching grant. Each dollar that is donated to this project is
matched dollar-for-dollar by this grant. So each donated dollar does
the work of two dollars.
In the summer of
2005 the park hosted the first field school in historic
preservation. Work was performed by National Park Service
professionals, with the assistance of master craftsmen and students
with the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at the University
of Vermont and the Cornerstones Community Partnerships of Santa Fe,
New Mexico. In the summer of 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 we continue
to make improvements to this important structure. In May of this
year a wood ceiling was installed in the North Ward of the Hospital.
Ceilings were also installed in the Hospital Steward’s room and the
Surgeon’s office. Flooring was installed in two storage rooms.
The Friends have
acquired a collection of 19th century medical
instruments, which will be displayed in the refurbished hospital.
Historical furnishings will be added to illustrate how the hospital
looked and operated during the 1880s.

PROTECTING
THE HISTORICAL VIEW
Protecting the
Historical View Project is a new situation that presented itself
recently when we became aware that a 38 acre hillside behind
Officers Row was offered for sale. The Friends and the National Park
Service became alarmed that this parcel of land could be developed
in an undesirable way that would forever alter the historical view
at the Fort. We need contributions to pay for this property and
incorporate it into Fort Davis National Historic Site to forever
preserve the view behind Officers Row. For more information about
this issue see the section on CURRENT PROJECTS – PROTECTING THE
VIEW.

Sometimes it takes a
village to complete a large project and sometimes it takes an army.
The Friends of Fort Davis National Historic Site needs an Army of
Contributors to help us with our mission to preserve, protect and
restore this unique piece of American heritage.

Join our Army today. Your tax exempt
contribution will be greatly appreciated.
Your check can be addressed to either the
Friends of Fort Davis NHS or the Conservation Fund mentioned above.
For contributions sent to the Friends of Fort Davis NHS, you can
specify whether you wish your gift to be
applied to the Hospital Restoration Project or towards purchasing
the 38 acre parcel to preserve the historical view.
