MISSION
STATEMENT
The mission of the Friends of Fort Davis
National Historic Site is to support the National Park Service in
its efforts to preserve, restore, interpret and publicize Fort Davis
National Historic Site.

FIVE YEAR VISION
1.
The Friends of Fort Davis NHS will be a robust organization with
annual memberships at various levels, a newsletter, a website, a
salaried executive
director, and a well-connected statewide advisory
committee. It will enhance
the Fort’s volunteer program on a
year-round basis, assist the Fort with annual events, and have the
capacity to raise funds in order to fulfill other aspects of its
mission.
2.
The restoration of the Post Hospital will be completed and that
building will
become the primary center in the National Park system
for the interpretation
of the history of frontier military medicine.
3.
The viewshed of the Fort will be securely protected through
conservation
easements, partnerships with the State Park and other
adjacent landowners,
and a public outreach program that will create
sympathetic understanding of the viewshed’s importance to the Fort
and to the community.
4.
The museum will be renovated to utilize state-of-the-art
interpretive techniques
to convey our history through inter-active
displays that will improve the publics awareness and appreciation of
the Forts contribution to the settling of
the Southwest.
5. A plan for addressing the structural preservation needs of the Fort
will be
developed and put in place with adequate funding for its
implementation.
6. A walking trail with interpretive stations will be developed along
the San Antonio-
El Paso Road across
the Fort, including possible interpretive stations at the pump house
and cemetery, including delineation of the cemetery if historical
information is available.
7. Visitors will leave the Fort with a better understanding of the
story of the Buffalo Soldiers and their role in the settlement of
the West.
8.
The Fort and the Fort Davis Independent School District will
cooperate to
develop multi-disciplinary programs that will be
integrated into the elementary,
middle and high school curricula and
can serve as a model for programs with
other schools districts.
9.
The community of Fort Davis will become involved in a wider variety
of activities
at the Fort and will develop a deeper commitment to
the continuation of the Fort’s federally and privately funded
programs.
